Wyoming, China’s coal economies linked

The key to the continued success of major coal-producing economies of Wyoming and China’s Shanxi Province is the continued development of clean coal technology — making traditional uses of coal cleaner and more efficient.

An editorial from Dr. Mark A. Northam, the founding director of the School of Energy Resources at the University of Wyoming, explains: “Both Wyoming and Shanxi are seeing declining demand for coal as utilities seek reductions in carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, in response to government regulation and market forces. That is a trend that doesn’t appear likely to reverse itself in the foreseeable future. As a result, we both have a deep interest in finding a better future for our vast coal reserves.”
